Domang is a young Sumatran elephant born in Tesso Nilo whose story has become a symbol used by conservationists, local government, and media to highlight the plight of the park’s wildlife and the urgent need for restoration and protection. Domang functions as the mascot and emotional centrepiece of the campaign: cute, shareable, and emblematic of a species that cannot speak for itself.

Tesso Nilo’s signiﬁcance
Tesso Nilo is one of the few remaining lowland rainforest tracts in Sumatra a biodiversity hotspot and critical corridor for Sumatran elephants and other species. However, the park has suffered severe fragmentation and conversion to plantations and illegal land uses. Multiple independent satellite analyses
and reporting indicate very high losses of primary forest over the past decades, with major restoration efforts underway by the Indonesian government as of 2024–2025.
